Today we’re talking about LinkedIn. Is your profile helping you or hurting you? A lot of people think LinkedIn is a good way to get a job but it’s also a great networking tool. You can get to know others in your industry and market segment. It’s important to understand how to use LinkedIn correctly. Buckle up! By the end of this podcast you will know exactly what you need to do with your profile.

STUFF WE LEARN IN THIS EPISODE

90% of recruiters are using LinkedIn so it’s a great way to get a job but knowing how much and what information to put in there can be daunting. Just dumping your resume there is not enough. You can put in videos, images, publications. You have a chance to show more of who you are, your own flavor and personality than your resume alone.

The main parts of your LinkedIn profile:

  1. Picture. Recent, professional looking headshot.
  2. Professional headline. You need your title and who you serve and what you do.
  3. Summary. Put key information and words that hit your target market.

Should you pay for the the premium membership? It depends on what you use this for. If you’re looking for a job it will be worthwhile to pay for it for just awhile. If you’re just networking the free account will do everything you need it to.

Other parts of the LinkedIn account:

  1. Experience. This is where you can go far beyond your resume. Videos and images will give insight into who you are. It needs to be easily understandable at a glance.
  2. Recommendations. You should have no more than 10, try for two per important position you’ve held. No one is interesting enough for recruiters to read more.
  3. Endorsements. If you have a big network you’ll be able to get a lot but they will not make or break your profile. Try to get 10-15.
  4. Connections. Get 300-350 connections in order for it to be useful to you professionally.
  5. Contact Information. I encourage you to put your personal email address instead of your corporate email. You can customize your URL to go along with your personal branding.
