It’s important to have the right type of profile to accomplish your goals. LinkedIn is much more than a resume if you learn how to utilize it correctly.

LinkedIn is a much different social medium than Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.  With recent additions and changes it is important to understand how to use it correctly

Have a complete profile.

  • Employment history. Keep it succinct.
  • Education history.
  • Links to your other social media.
  • Appropriate picture of yourself.

Put in a lot of key words.

  • It’s wise to spend time thinking of words to describe what you have done (or are doing) that are key to your industry, organization and type of job.

Spend 2-4 hours setting up your profile.

  • This is not a resume.
  • Must have a broad appeal.
  • Craft the right career story.

Keep an up to date profile even if you’re not looking to change jobs.

  • Be seen as an expert in your industry.
  • Be prepared for future unseen changes.

Write a good summary statement.

  • Be truthful.
  • Give insightful information about who you’ve been, who you are and where you’re going.

What is the best way to connect with people?

  • Connect with people you know in your industry and market segment.
  • Connect with people, in limited amounts, that you would like to know.

Best ways to use LinkedIn?

  • Become part of groups!
  • Customize your news feed.
  • Post relevant information.
  • Get on the Job Boards.
  • Get up to 25-30 recommendations.
