Lifestyle design is very popular in the media lately and promises us a spectacular life without worries or cares. I want to look at both sides of the coin in this episode and detail some of the positives of seemingly conflicting career choices.
Life design basically means to do what you want for work and leave corporate america behind. Live the life you want from where you want and build your career around that. All it takes is a little risk and you can live the life you’ve dreamed of.
When I talk to people about this topic I ask “If you could do what you want everyday what would you do?” They usually answer “I’d travel the world!” but there are some things you would miss out on by not living the “regular life”. The timing for this kind of lifestyle may not not be right for you. Let’s start off by talking through some of the positives of living in a “regular” house and “regular” suburb.
-It’s nice to know your neighbors and build relationships
-There is great security in those friendships.
-My kids get to play on teams, make friends.
– I like building memories, talking, learning & playing in a familiar place.
-Getting to know family is important.
Now let’s flip the coin and discuss a few of the positives of lifestyle design.
-I love to travel.
-Seeing how other families can grow so close working side by side and living in different circumstances than we do.
-Experiencing other cultures and ways of life enriches my own.
-Some of my favorite experiences over the last few years have been abroad.
Both ways of life are great and there is a time and season for everything. It is possible to create both experiences, you don’t have to choose between them. The aspects of each can enlarge the other. The next time you’re thinking of lifestyle design remember to look at both sides of the fence. I hope you can see the benefits of working both into your life. Remember, it’s your career so take control.
