QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Q: “2018 is around the corner, what can I do to make sure it’s a great year?” –Tim, Vancouver B.C.

A: Success is all about the Slow Burn. Slowly move toward your goals, consistently taking small steps. Research shows you are more likely to succeed by mastering small steps than by taking on enormous changes and expecting results in a fraction of the time. Your brain can only focus on a few items at a time.

STUFF WE LEARN IN THIS EPISODE

In response to a problem with one individual organizations often establish a rule that pertains to everyone instead of handling the problem with the specific individual.

Rules That Ruin Your Culture

  1. Promotion rules: One has to be in a position, a certain amount of time before being promoted. It holds them hostage instead of letting them move on and up when they are ready.
  2. Ludicrous attendance requirements: Salaried employees should be measured by the work they do, not the hours they sit at their desk.
  3. Eliminating self-expression: Rules about what people can have at their desk and in their cubicles.
  4. Overly restrictive internet usage: Managers need to have one on one coaching with individuals who abuse their time. Most people hop online to decompress during breaks.
  5. Forced performance rankings: It brings down high performers and creates insecurity and dissatisfaction.
  6. Banning mobile phones.
  7. Stealing employees frequent flyer miles or hotel points: You’re sending the message that you don’t appreciate their travel sacrifices. Traveling is a major pain. They’ve earned the free airline and hotel miles and points!
  8. Email policies: Form emails drive people crazy.
  9. Political correctness: Being too strict causes intolerance of others instead of being inclusive.
