Let’s end 2017 with some timely advice for 2018. Having a life that brims with joy takes looking outside yourself, focusing on the right (and most important) things and bringing others along for the journey.
QUESTION OF THE DAY
Q: “Should I unplug during my vacation this holiday season, or not?” –Miles, Vancouver B.C.
A: Organizations use a lot of energy building a culture. One of the best ways to ruin that culture is to have people go on vacation and then continue working like they never left, expecting them to work while they are on holiday. Trying to stay a bit caught up on the emails may mean a more manageable load when you get back, but it will send signals you may not want to send. Catching up on small work to do’s during vacation takes time from your family and doesn’t allow you time to turn your brain off and relax. So, UNPLUG!
STUFF WE LEARN IN THIS EPISODE
How are you going to create a life that brims with joy? You don’t need to make massive changes. Here are some ideas…
There are few people who focus on joy in their lives. We constantly focus on work, family, tasks we need to do, but rarely do we stop to consider what brings us joy and if we’re spending enough time doing those things. You’d be amazed at how you can bring others into your life to involve them in what really matters.
“Pleasure is perishable… joy is lasting.” –Neal A. Maxwell
Carrying anger and hatred towards others pushes out the joy. There is a power in forgiveness. It is up to you to create the joy in your life. It doesn’t depend on the circumstances; it depends on your reactions and what you create in those moments.
Be the one who cheers people on and builds them up! Look past the faults of others and provide them with a breath of kindness. You never know what they are going enduring in their life. Everyone wants to belong and feel needed.
Joy comes through connecting and serving other people.
